A dead outlet is often a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the same circuit, usually in a bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside. Press reset on every GFCI you can find and check the breaker panel. If the outlet is still dead, or it is loose in the wall, cracked or discolored, it needs a repair.

Common wiring jobs include replacing two-prong outlets with grounded or GFCI-protected ones, adding outlets so cords are not running across rooms, putting in a dedicated circuit for a window unit, freezer or space heater, and installing ceiling fans and light fixtures on boxes rated to hold them.
